Accent lighting is a choice about what to leave dark
Most outdoor lighting is trying to cover ground. Accent lighting asks which one thing should be looked at. It is not coverage. Point it at one tree, one column, one entry and leave the rest alone. The dark part is not an oversight. It is what makes the lit part read.The concept takes one sentence and a lot of discipline. Pick what matters and stop there. The pull is always toward adding, and holding the line is what keeps the result looking designed.
What is worth accenting
Some things take light well and plenty do not. Anything with texture picks up light and shows it off, because light raking across a rough surface creates shadow and shadow creates interest. Smooth surfaces reflect light without doing anything with it. Shape helps too: a tree with structure, an arch, a column, a gable peak.

Accent light arrives from one of two directions, and the difference is not subtle. Light from below is inherently dramatic, which is why it suits a column, a trunk or a stone face and flatters very little else. Downlighting comes from above, the way light normally does, so it feels natural and calm.
A maintenance note
Landscape accents point at plants, and plants move. A shrub uplit perfectly this spring will have swallowed the fixture in three years. Nothing is broken. The aim just needs a look.
